Welcome!

Feel free to have a look around and email me - nicki@nickihastie.demon.co.uk

I originally set up this site to encourage other lesbians to write essays, articles and dissertations on lesbian subjects - especially outside of a Lesbian Studies or Women's Studies programme. You can find the full text of a number of my research writings on this site. The earliest of these were written as a BA and then MA student within the English Department at Leicester University, England, 1987-1991. These days my writing interests are less academic.

Other writings here include conference presentations, brief lighthearted articles and new creative works written for the web. Most of these writings continue to be lesbian-themed. For those who prefer something different, it's not all essays and prose. You can find poetry, my coming out hypertext and ideas in progress in the Studio section of this website.
The Studio has links to multimedia pieces and video of me reading at the Tea & Poetry event in East Hardwick, Vermont, USA in August 2007.

Keep in touch with my thoughts and most recent writings by reading my blog, Out on a dike, which I began in April 2005. It's regularly updated. Unsure where to start? Review a selection of blog articles on the Lesbian Essays page.

I'm also part of a collective of queer women writers with three US-based women (Jan Steckel, Julie R. Enszer, and Merry Gangemi). There's plenty happening to stir our world so don't forget to visit our Woman-Stirred blog which promotes lesbian and bi women's writing and culture.

Find out who is due to appear on Woman-Stirred Radio, hosted by Merry Gangemi on WGDR (broadcasting from Goddard College, Plainfield, Vermont). The show streams live over the web with high-profile LGBTQ-themed guests. Since August 2007 I have a regular weekly slot providing commentary from a British lesbian perspective.

I hope these writings provide ideas and inspiration for others working to promote the visibility of lesbians in all areas of life. All I ask is that anyone who quotes from or prints these pages gives full acknowledgement and adequately references the source.
